Music/ Poetry: Videos for EVERYONE

Okay, so it’s no secret to anyone who reads my personal LJ that I draw a ton of inspiration from music. I have to have it playing while I’m writing or I just can’t concentrate. It makes it really hard to write when I’m away from home, though, so I always make sure to take my bulging CD binder with me.

Anyway, I’m equally inspired by movies with good music and music videos (nearly the same thing, right?). When I get stuck on my novels, I frequently imagine them as movies and work out what the scenes and pacing would look like on that front. And ever since I was a tiny maggot, I’ve loved music videos with great music and vaguely speculative fiction plots. Great training for writing short stories! So I’m going to share (hopefully, if html doesn’t hate me today) a few of my favorite vaguely genre music videos and pretty, pretty, pretty please, if you have any other videos that you love that pair great music with cool speculative videos, post them in the comments!)

  1. This one! I got it from the blog of my favorite author, Jonathan Carroll. Warning: a little bloody for some people.

  2. awesome videos πŸ˜€
I love the first one, its gorgeous how they show time progressing.

Heres a few music videos with a storyline that I like πŸ˜€

  3. who the hell would i be without A. music????? and b. posting/pimping out my favourites? (i need it to write too… in fact i need it in every single aspect of my life).

it’s no secret that i worship Muse…. even after hearing that the Twilight series was “inspired” by their music. i got past that :D…. and even they did. haha. anyway :

my favourite song by them :

HYSTERIA…. thats Justin Theroux in the vid. very disturbing, but HOT.

oh, man. Matthew Bellamy is so awesome. ❀

then there is Something for Kate, an aussie band who saved my life in 99 :

The Futurist — their “latest” single (2007 — the singer Paul Dempsey who is my personal hero is recording his solo album right now)

    California πŸ˜€

and the reason i have my username hallways πŸ˜€ HALLWAYS. very old song, from 99. πŸ˜€

    okay i shall stop now. πŸ˜€ ❀

  4. One of my great addictions is AMVs. 8)

Tainted Donuts, bounty hunters from one series chasing a bandit from another
My Lodoss Land, set to Sonata Arctica’s My Land
First Push, set to Garbage’s Push It
Wind Beneath My Wings, set to Sonata Arctica’s cover
Nausicaa, set to Sarah McLachlan’s World on Fire
    Byakuya’s Silent Screams
Key The Metal Idol, set to Korn’s Twisted Transistor
Hold Me, from Tidirium Studios and set to a Swedish ballad
Akira, set to Genesis’s Land of Confusion
    Pokemon Never Die

It’s particularly annoying when really cool videos vanish from Youtube for some reason or another.

  5. Oh my god I have been listening to that Low vs Diamond song on repeat three-to-six-hours-a-day for the last two weeks, and when I clicked the video and it started playing, I thought I was quietly losing my mind.

  6. I’m also totally dependent on music to write, but even aside from that my favorite kind of songs are the ones that are About Something Else. (Meaning songs that *aren’t* about relationships or nothing anyone who didn’t write it can understand…)
I don’t really get inspired by music videos as much, I have to say, which is weird for someone who spends so much time sitting around watching Fuse.
My top-two songs with speculative themes, however, have got to be Yellow Sun by The Raconteurs (there is no such thing as metaphor. WEREWOLVES.) and Demon Daughters by Phantom Planet. Both of which also happen to be awesome.

Both of which are similar and yet nothing like these videos…

    (acoustic Demon Daughters…)

    (live Yellow Sun…)

I’ll be thinking about speculative videos now though…I don’t know… I should probably know more, due to aforementioned addiction to music channels. Really, the only thing I can think of at the moment is that my favorite music video of all time is the Arctic Monkeys video for View From The Afternoon which features ONLY THE DRUMMER, oh yes.

  7. Nice stuff — hallways reminds me a little of some of Fuel’s stuff — have you tried them? Or Breaking Benjamin?

  8. know both πŸ˜€ don’t much care for Breaking Benjamin….. used to love Fuel. “Innocent” was my favourite song by them. Hallways is a bit reminiscent of that, and early Bush…. but Dempsey’s sound has changed MUCH. ❀ ❀ <3. i love that man. and he's steadily working his way from "platonic crush" to "OMG SHAG WORTHY"…. the hair is really doing it for me. teeeheee. too bad i know him and his wife. (who people say i look like).

speaking of bush, they have my very very favourite video done ever — (it wont let me embed) – by Joel Schumacher. man, Gavin.. you used to be so hot. the other is "Electrical Storm" by U2 : — by Anton Corbjin. LOVE his photography, did a paper on him.

i only posted ONE Muse video because i looooove EVERYTHING…. have been in love with them since my friend Amy in London sent me “Plug In Baby” in 98 on a mixed tape. god matt bellamy turns my crank. in the “dear lord i want to turn yours” kinda way. πŸ˜€ but they inspire me SO much…i was so dismayed when i read the dedication in “Breaking Dawn.” enough to be tearful. and then it was in the film… i literally could not play “Supermassive Black Hole” (a song i LOVE) because it made me think of fugly Cullen baseball. LAME. i have since gotten over. πŸ˜€ that scene is actually kinda cool from a cinematographer’s standpoint, anyway. (that was my focus when i was in film school) πŸ˜€

Starting Lament tomorrow because it’s too cold to go anywhere and schools are closed — again. πŸ˜€

and if you couldn’t tell… im a huge lyrics sucker. like i’ll take them over fiction…. WOW. ❀ SUPERNATURAL is on, so i must depart. πŸ˜€

  9. Me too. They’re probably one of my top three favorites, possibly even the top of my top three favorites.
